Benedict Rubbra

Contemporary painting in oil

Benedict was born in 1938. He studied at Christ’s Hospital and the Slade School of Art, London. Rubbra earned his living as a portrait painter. Notable commissions include HRH the Prince of Wales for the Fishmongers’ company, Sir Colin Davis, Lord Hailsham, Lord Simon for BP and Sir Peter Burt for the Bank of Scotland.

In 1970 he combined his career in portraiture with a developing process of making models based on ideas drawn from the landscape that then become the starting point for his paintings.

He has been exhibiting professionally since 1959 and has work in major public and private collections worldwide.

Rubbra has lived in Devon since 2001.
